It seems there’s a new vodka on store shelves every day. With this cluttered market, it’s hard to decide what’s authentic and what’s junk. If you’re a fan of Russian grain-based vodkas like Stolichnaya but blanch at the high prices, try Ikon vodka. First made in 1862, Ikon is still produced 1500km from Moscow and is quadruple filtered through Russian birchwood. Only recently has it become available in the U.S., and it is earning solid reviews. Ikon is an ultra-clean vodka with overtones of vanilla and undertones of citrus. The finish gives you a pleasant, needling warmth. It is smooth and flavorful enough to be drunk neat, yet subtle enough to serve as the base for any martini you can think of. The best part is that Ikon is real Russian vodka that compares to some of the best brands, but costs only around $16 for 750ml at Friar Tuck. Nastrovya!
